The challenge

Four novels in, sales flat, and an audience that skewed twenty years older than the readers who would actually love the book. The problem was not quality — it was that the right readers had never seen it.

The strategy

How we approached it.

01

Find the real reader

Review mining across the backlist showed the strongest response came from literary book clubs, not adventure readers. The whole campaign pivoted.

02

Build the club kit

Discussion guide, author Q&A and a bulk-order path, sent to nine hundred moderators with a personal note rather than a press release.

03

Convert clubs into lists

Club readers became list voters. Placement followed the conversation instead of trying to manufacture it.

In the author's words

They told me my readers were not who I thought they were. They were right, and it changed what I write next.
